Chapter.23
Holiday’s POV

I felt like living death, my eyes kept sliding shut and my whole world seemed to shift and slide out from under me as I tried to force myself to come too and look around. I could feel grass on the back of my neck and the smell of stale air flowed into my nose. Cracking my eyes open I looked to my side where a familiar red head was sprawled out in the grass next to me. His eyes were closed and his hair covered most of his face.

Using an elbow to brace myself against the grass I pushed myself up and looked around dumbly. I hated waking up and not knowing where I was. It made me feel useless, like I was too dumb to even remember where I had passed out.

Emit and I were sprawled out in a shabbily kept field next to what looked like a highway. There was a shabby yellow Volkswagen bug parked  at the side of the highway and leaning against it was a familiar person wearing a baggy jacket that covered up the chains on his arms. He had a stocking cap pulled over his silver spikes of hair and tinted sunglasses over his crimson eyes. Add it all together, and Jared looked like a total rapist chilling against the car like that.

Lifting myself up I felt my legs shake as I walked towards him. Dimmly I realized my camp shirt was gone but I didn’t think much of it. “Oh hey.” He said when he noticed me. “You’re up.”  Walking over to me he caught my wrist quickly making me freeze before a sharp sting went up my index finger before Jared stuck my finger into his mouth sucking a few drops of blood from the fresh puncture wound. I drew back quickly shuddering and Jared slipped the needle he had used to pierce my skin into the top of his hat.

“That n-needs to st-stop.” I told him coldly narrowing my eyes. “I d-don’t care who you s-s-say you are. V-Vampires are n-not cool.”

He rolled his eyes very dramatically. “I’m not a vampire, they’re creepy.”

Right, so the vampires are the creepy ones here while he’s pricking me with needles and leaning against a car like some wanna be thug? “Wh-Where are w-we?”

“A few hours away from camp.” He said with a shrug. “I stole the car from one of the Demeter kids. Drove until I felt my eyelids getting heavy. I wasn’t going to take Gomez, but I figure I would feel bad later on if I was to leave him behind.”

“Ok….and wh-what’s g-going on?” I asked tentatively.

He chewed on his thumb nail looking off into the distance thoughtfully. “You saw it too right? The images when we walked into the big house?” I nodded slowly while I felt my stomach curdle and I had to choke down bile. “When I was in that vision or whatever the Hades it was. I didn’t have my chains.” He gestured to his arms which were covered by the overlarge sleeves of his coat. “And it just felt…right. It felt like I had never had them.”

“So...We’re wh-what? Going to f-f-find a locksmith to c-cut them off?” I guessed and Jared shook his head.

“I’m going to go find my mother, and make her take away my curse. I needed to bring you!” He yelled as I turned around quickly and started walking randomly feeling fed up and not wanting part of whatever sort of plan he was cooking up. “A quest needs three demi-gods and I don’t know anyone at camp! Everyone that I used to know there are long gone.”

“A q-quest?” I asked puzzled stopping for a moment to look over my shoulder at him.

He cocked his head questionably. “You’ve never been on a quest before?”

“J-Just got thrown into this m-m-messed up w-world less than a w-week ago.” I reminded him and his eyes dimmed a little.

“Oh right.” He muttered. “I forgot. Of course a person like you wouldn’t care.”

I stiffened. “Wh-What do you mean? A p-person like m-m-me?”

He shrugged again and I wished he would stop that before his arms fell off. “You were raised mortal, stuff like this is all a joke to people like you, it’s a fairy tale. Go ahead.” He said waving me on.

“Leave, what does it matter to you if I end up getting eaten by a Dracon or if I fall into an abyss or something small like that.”

“You aren’t going to g-guilt me.” I warned him as I crossed my arms and he pretended to look shocked.

“Of course not! I would never think about guiltling a lady.”

“There aren’t any ladies here.” A sleepy voice grumbled and Emit stumbled out of the grassy field. He looked almost normal without all of his eccentric accessories and without a match in his hand. “Why have you kidnapped us?” He questioned looking over at Jared and Jared shrugged for the third time which made me grit my teeth.

“I was just going to take you on an adventure, Disney Land or something.”

“Your m-m-mother lives in D-Disney L-Land?” I asked tightly and to my surprise he nodded.

“Well she spends a lot of time there, you’d be surprised at all of the dark secrets those parks have. She gets a thrill from seeing terrible stuff happen at the “Happiest place on earth”.”

“She sounds like a real charmer.” Emit muttered under his breathe and Jared elbowed him sharply making the smaller boy fall over back into the grass.

“Come on, Holly.” Jared wheedled looking back over at me. “You want me to be happy right?”

I hardly knew him, why did he assumed I cared about his happiness? The dude terrified me. As though he had read my mind a sly grin slipped over his face and he threw in casually. “And you know the only thing tying me to your Dagger is the curse right? Once that’s gone I won’t have any reason to hang around you anymore. You’ll be free of me, like I had never even been there in the first place, and like I mentioned. Disney Land is the happiest place on earth, don’t you like happy things?”

My mind felt stuffy and I was confused but I knew what the right thing to do was. Looking Jared in the eyes I said firmly. “I’m n-not d-d-doing this. No way am I going on a q-quest with either of y-you.”

Jared’s face tightened and he said coldly. “And here I was really hoping this would happen the easy way. Emit, help me grab her.”
